Rock Island - 16 October 2016

UBMBC

Rock Island is one of those hidden gems, a world isolated from the surrounding landscape by erosion.

Largely surrounded by sheer cliffs there are only a few ways to get to Rock Island.

Rock Island is covered with a tough windswept heath, able to withstand extremes of heat, cold and drought. In places Platy Pagodas tower above the heath, home to the vulnerable pagoda Daisy. Lush rainforest fills the surrounding gorges.

The stark landscape is illuminated with bursts of brilliant colour from the boronias, fringe-myrtles, mint bush, orchids and pagoda daisies in spring.

Our route took us from the Tiger Snake Canyon Car Park, generally east and south-east, across Little Rock Island, through The Place That Time Forgot and up onto Rock Island.

There is so much packed into this outstanding short walk.
