Mt Airly & Genowlan Mountain are 2 large mesas just north of the Gardens of Stone. They dominate the surrounding countryside. The mesas are separated by Gap Creek which has cut a narrow steep sided valley between them.
The whole area has been mined for many years, initially for oil shale & later for gold & diamonds. A coal mine is operating just to the west of Mt Airly.
There are many relics such as cave houses, tramways & mine structures from the shale oil mining period on the eastern slopes of Mt Airly, making the area archaeologically significant and sensitive.
Genowlan Mountain has colonies of endangered plants, interesting canyons, large pagoda mazes & the relics of diamond & gold mining.
The area is now the Mugii Murum-ban State Conservation Area..
