Some 70% of Australia's land dwelling snakes are venemous.  There are 20 species that are known to be dangerous to humans.  They have been grouped into the following 7 genera:

  • Death Adders
  • Black & Mulga Snakes
  • Taipans
  • Brown Snakes
  • Tiger Snakes
  • Copperheads
  • Rough Scaled Snakes

All have fast acting venom and very effective delivery systems.

While snakes are generally shy and avoid contact they are potentially dangerous and should be left well alone.

Snakes camoflage systems can make them extremely difficult to see so care is needed in the bush to avoid accidently stepping on one.

This large Red Belly Black Snake can hardly be seen in fairly open short grass.
