Feral Cats are known to have existed in Australia for almost 200 years.

Many environmentalists claim that feral cats have been an ecological disaster for Australian birds and animals.

There is some dispute between authoraties on just how much damage feral cats do.  Some researchers state that it has been difficult to gather substantive evidence to support the view that feral cats have had a major impact on native fauna.

There is also evidence that feral cats help control other pests like rabbits and mice.

Nevertheless anyone who has seen the damage a feral cat can do would agree they need to be controlled.  Unfortunately control programs are difficult to implement because cats need live prey.  They can't be baited like foxes.  Traps need to be checked daily to release any native predators inadvertantly caught in the traps.

Even when there are no Control Programs in progress, Park Rangers are interested to know about Feral Cat activity, so report it when if see it.
