Comments:

The Zig Zag opened in 1869 and operated until 1910.

The deep cuttings, tunnel and 3 large stone viaducts provided the first railway connection between Clarence and Lithgow.

Altogether there were 3 tracks, a top road, a middle road and a bottom road that were used to work the trains up or down the mountain

The Zig Zag was replaced in 1910 when traffic volumes became to large to manage.  The replacement route travelled through 10 tunnels and took an extra 8 kilometres.

These days the Zig Zag Railway is operated by steam enthusiasts as a museum and tourist attraction.

Although the engines and carriages are different to those that ran on the original railway it is possible to get a real sense of the way it used to be.

It is well worth a visit.
