The Knapsack Viaduct was completed in 1867 as part of the Lapstone Zig Zag
.
With 7 arches and piers 38 metres high, the bridge remains one of the largest and most impressive stone arch viaducts in NSW.
The viaduct was built to carry railway traffic across the deep Jamison Creek gully. It was used for that purpose until 1913 when the railway was diverted to the current bridge.
In 1926 the Knapsack Viaduct was adapted for motor vehicles. In 1939 the deck was widened to 9.1 metres. Each time the bridge was modified extensive efforts were made to preserve its attractive structure.
Motor vehicle traffic was moved to the M4 Motorway in 1993 and in 1995 the bridge was reopened as a tourist attraction.
